This past May, Dr. Mike Zigler and "his crewe" returned for a very fruitful and productive optometry campaign in Mexico. Our good friend, Mr. Issi Radilla, was so helpful in orchestrating this campaign and they treated hundreds of patients in some villages east of Acapulco.
The first week in August, our long-time friends and supporters Drs. Tom Mattern, Tim Luvkosky, and Howard Farran made the trek to Clinica Betel with three dental school instructors and seven dental students from the Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health – A.T. Still University. Dr. Farran is the publisher of a popular monthly dental periodical, DentalTown, which goes out to 120,000 dentists throughout the world. His first trip with us was to Chenalho, Chiappas back in the early 1990's and then to Atoyac the following year. He returned again for this past trip along with two of his four sons.
Howard wrote, "It was so rewarding to me watching these seven dental students go to work. We treated more than 300 patients on this trip. We would work all day and talk about dentistry until midnight every single day. These students entered into the sacred and sovereign profession of dentistry for all the right reasons – treating their fellow man and doing the right thing every time. They’re not out to “make a killing,” work two days a week and drive fancy cars around. We’d talk all night about modern dental care and the aesthetic/health compromise. My boys got to talking with these dental students and really got turned onto dentistry – for the first time I can remember! I can’t think of any other trip I’ve taken my boys on that had such a positive impact on all of us! I can retire and die in peace after witnessing the next crop of dentists getting ready to enter the profession with such passion and drive to do the right thing. They did such great work on this trip to Mexico. Dentistry is going to be in great hands."
Dr. Tom Mattern was able to work alongside his daughter, Jessica Mattern, who made her first trip back when she was only 13 years old. She is now a second year dental student at the University of Creighton Dental School in Ohmaha, Nebraska. Tanner Flaherty is starting his senior year at A.T. Still University/Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health and this was his 3rd trip to the clinic in the past 3 years!
You'd have to live under a rock to not know that Mexico is undergoing some tumultuous
times. We continue to need all of the financial support and prayers from all of you.
Thank you for your continued support.
